Ikhaya Loxolo - what's that?

Ikhaya Loxolo means, translated from the Xhosa language, „home of peace“; it is a community for people with special needs, where all people- with and without special needs- live and work together. Two German educators, Alexandra and Michael Guenther, decided in 2004 to establish this home in a very rural and remote village in the Eastern Cape region (former Transkei) of South Africa. This area still remains underprivileged and much undeveloped, with hardly any care facilities for the disabled.

The Idea

The home will be started by two professional managers, who make sure the project runs smoothly. While they train all staff in the work with people with special needs and part of the staff in management, these two managers are actively involved in every part of the practical work. Aiming towards Self-sufficiency. After inviting Ikhaya Loxolo into the Hobeni village, the local community provided the project with firstly 1 ha of fertile land. Here the building of two traditional  mud huts as well as a huge flat  is in process; these houses are used for sleeping, cooking, dining and work shopping as well as an office. In different workshops like gardening, farming, baking, cooking and arts, the disabled will learn from the workshop leader, how to produce their own food and other essentials. The project is aiming towards self-sufficiency, as far as this is possible. Surplus of the project’s own produce gets sold locally which in return enables Ikhaya Loxolo to buy products, that can’t be produced by them, at the open market. As the project is also inviting the wider community to be trained here especially in gardening and food processing,  Ikhaya Loxolo is contributing immensely to sustainable and economically friendly development service for the wider community. As Ikhaya Loxolo is a home for the mentally disabled in the first place, it will hardly be able to survive at the open market. Keeping that in mind, the organisation will always be depending on donations. We, as a German non-profit organisation, would like to contribute greatly to the well being of Ikhaya Loxolo
